Nomadic Gelatins Legend of the Red Moose Red Moose Legend

A Red Moose is an animal that has spent many long summers feeding in the cedar grove swamps of the Great North.  An older, more mature, adult moose knows that the best and most abundant food to be found is deep in the heart of these cedars.

Tannic acid from cedar trees in this area is released into the cool swamp water through the weeping of tree sap.  That same tannic acid tinges the coat of this mighty beast a deep, dark, beautiful red.

A native legend states that the Nomadic Gelatins (one of the founding clans of the great Algonquin tribe who call a moose a "moz") were saved from starvation and certain death when a Red Moose appeared to the youngest of the clan, beckoning her to follow him into the swamp.  Feeling no fear of this great beast with the huge palmate antlers and the almost-glowing red coat, she followed him into the swamp.  He led her to a land where her clan would never be hungry again - a land teeming with game and rich with grains.  The next morning she awoke - back with her family again.  The Red Moose had been seen in the night by others in the clan.  As she told of the journey she had taken, the elders encouraged her to lead them to the place the mighty red beast had shown her.  They were all pleased to find that it did indeed exist - just as the child had described - a true Northern Paradise.

In this tradition, we hope you find your visit to the Red Moose Inn to be a true Northern Paradise, teeming with bountiful food and drink.
